Add yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar to a large bowl. Pour in warm water in bowl and mix well. Allow yeast to proof for about 10 minutes and become bubbly.
Stir in remaining sugar, salt, olive oil and 1 1/2 cups flour.
Start adding the remaining flour in increments to form a smooth, elastic dough. Once dough is holding together, turn out onto a well floured smooth surface and knead in the remaining flour, about 8 to 10 minutes.
Grease the bowl and return the dough, covering with a towel. Place in a warn place until dough doubles in size, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
Punch the dough down and using a knife, cut into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a 7 to 8 inch rope and place on a parchment covered bakinng sheet.
Cover and allow breadsticks to rise until doubled, about one hour.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Mix butter and garlic powder together and set aside until breadsticks are baked.
Bake breadsticks for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and brush with the garlic butter. Serve breadsticks warm. Store in an airtight container.
