Natural Homemade Beauty and Body Care Recipes“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ~ Hippocrates

It’s a fact that we are what we eat because the body only processes and uses the raw materials that we put into or on our bodies. Therefore, if we put in or on good, we will look and feel better or the alternative, which is if we put crap in or on, we will also look and feel like crap.

You might not see the effects immediately but over time the changes will come based on how well you care for yourself because quite literally, “you are what you eat” is true.

And while eating and drinking our way to good health is essential for how we look and feel, so is what we put on our bodies.

We cannot absorb water through the skin, but we do absorb some nutrients, minerals and chemicals. Those nutrients, minerals and chemicals from the things we touch, put on our skin or are exposed to in our environment. So it is up to us, to help improve our health and wellbeing by making better choices on how to protect our skin.

One way to do that is to pay attention to the beauty and body care products we use.

Have you bothered to read the labels of the products you use?

I hadn’t until I was diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer, a few years ago.

My skin went crazy right after the surgery. Literally, crazy!

All of a sudden I was allergic to everything. I had to change all my products and finding new ones that my skin would accept was a long expensive process of testing and trying products until I found ones my skin liked.

Natural Homemade Beauty and Body Care RecipesThe biggest theme throughout the process was that my body only accepted natural, less processed products. My body knew what was good for me.

Before all this happened, I was using “top of the line” products. They were expensive but I believed the hype they were better for me than other products. But after reading the labels, I became aware that many of these products were loaded with unhealthy chemicals, dyes, fragrances, heavy metals and minerals that we shouldn’t be putting on the body.

After reading the labels, I became aware that many of these products were loaded with unhealthy chemicals, dyes, fragrances, heavy metals and minerals that we shouldn’t be putting on the body.

Now, although my skin has calmed down and I am less bothered by some products, I have kept the practice of using natural beauty and body care products because I figure my body was telling me something that I should listen to and follow.

I’ve also found that you rarely need those expensive, less than natural products because you can get most of the benefits through natural homemade beauty and body care products.

Need hydration for your hair? Use olive or coconut oil. It’s inexpensive, has no other additives and is probably in your kitchen right now. Use olive or coconut oil. It’s inexpensive, has no other additives and is probably in your kitchen right now.

Need a skin product for your face? Drink more water. Dehydration makes you dry up like a prune. Use olive or coconut oil, essential oils, seaweed, mud facials and for helping to combat wrinkles and aging. Because of how the body absorbs, these natural products have a better chance of helping your skin than many of the name brand products on the market which generally can’t be absorbed or are in such small doses they don’t do anything except drain your bank account.

You can even make your own sunscreens. I bet you didn’t realize plain old coconut oil has an SPF of 2 to 8. But even better are raspberry and carrot seed oils which range from 28 to 50 SPF. Mix with non-nano sized zinc oxide and you’ll have a nice smelling sunscreen without all the nasty stuff. Regular sunscreen use is one of the best ways to combat aging.

You can even make hair shampoos, soaps, body washes and facial scrubs and masks right at home with a few easy to find ingredients.

And if you are buying products: read the labels, learn what the words mean and buy ones with less of the bad stuff in them and more of the good.

Combine putting good on your body with putting good in it and you’ll have the medicine Hippocrates quote talks about.
